IMPACT
OUR STORY
It began with Mew, an abandoned kitten who needed somewhere safe to go.
One rescue became another. Before long, 23 cats were sharing Rachel’s home, making it clear that a more permanent response was needed. Nairobi Feline Sanctuary was created to give vulnerable cats safety, treatment and the possibility of a better life.
The sanctuary later moved to Riara Ridge, in the Tigoni area, along Nazareth–Limuru Road, Kiambu County, where more than 200 cats now receive care in a greener, more spacious environment.
Over time, we recognised that sanctuary care alone could not end the cycle of suffering. NFS is therefore moving towards prevention through Trap–Neuter–Vaccinate–Return, responsible rehoming, resident-cat placements and community education.
What began with one abandoned kitten has grown into a commitment to creating lasting change for cats across Kenya.
WHAT WE DO
TRAP–NEUTER–VACCINATE–RETURN
TNVR is a humane and effective approach to managing free-roaming cat populations. Cats are safely trapped, sterilised, vaccinated, allowed to recover and returned to the territories they already know.
By preventing repeated litters and protecting animal and community health, TNVR helps create healthier and more stable community-cat populations.
RESCUE AND SANCTUARY CARE
NFS provides rescue, treatment and sanctuary care for cats facing serious welfare risks.
Some cats recover while awaiting suitable homes. Others are elderly, disabled, chronically unwell or unable to live safely elsewhere. For these cats, the sanctuary becomes their permanent home.
New cases are assessed individually according to urgency, welfare needs, available space and resources.
PAKA MKAZI
FREE TO BELONG
Paka Mkazi gives suitable rescued cats the opportunity to leave sanctuary life for secure, caring business and institutional environments where they can live with greater freedom and truly belong.
Cats are carefully assessed, sterilised and normally placed in bonded pairs. They are matched with suitable hotels, farms, warehouses, institutions and other secure premises that commit to their lifelong care.
ADOPTION
A permanent home can transform the life of a rescued cat.
Cats who are healthy, socialised and ready for family life are matched carefully with suitable adopters. Every placement is guided by the cat’s individual needs and long-term welfare.
Available cats and adoption applications are managed through our adoption app.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND PARTNERSHIPS
Lasting change depends on informed and compassionate communities.
NFS works with residents, schools, businesses, property managers, community caregivers and animal-welfare partners to promote sterilisation, vaccination, responsible care and humane coexistence with community cats.
A SANCTUARY WITH A PREVENTIVE PURPOSE
We do not believe the answer to animal suffering is an ever-expanding shelter.
Our long-term direction is to reserve sanctuary care primarily for cats who genuinely cannot live safely elsewhere, particularly elderly, disabled and medically vulnerable cats.
Healthy community cats should, wherever possible, remain in their familiar territories following TNVR. Socialised cats may be rehomed, while suitable non-returnable cats may be considered for Paka Mkazi placement.
By combining urgent care with preventive action, NFS can protect vulnerable cats today while reducing the number who will need rescuing tomorrow.
SUPPORT OUR WORK
Caring for more than 200 sanctuary residents while expanding preventive work requires food, medication, veterinary treatment, vaccinations, safe accommodation, transport and dedicated caregivers.

Please do not bring or leave an animal at the sanctuary without prior assessment and approval. NFS is not a 24-hour emergency-response service, and every case is assessed according to severity, available space and resources.
