Rescue saves individual lives. Trap–Neuter–Vaccinate–Return helps prevent the cycle that places so many cats at risk.
Trap–Neuter–Vaccinate–Return, commonly known as TNVR, is a humane and effective approach to managing free-roaming cat populations. Cats are safely trapped, sterilised, vaccinated, allowed to recover and returned to the territories they already know.
Sterilisation prevents repeated litters, while vaccination protects animal and community health. Together, these interventions reduce mating-related conflict and support healthier, more stable community-cat populations.
HOW TNVR WORKS
Assessment
NFS gathers information about the cats, their location, approximate numbers, feeding arrangements and any immediate welfare concerns. A site visit may be required before trapping begins.
Humane Trapping
Cats are trapped using appropriate humane equipment and handled in a way that minimises fear and distress.
Veterinary Care
Each cat is sterilised, vaccinated and assessed for visible health concerns. Community cats are ear-tipped while under anaesthesia so that they can be recognised as sterilised without needing to be trapped again.
Recovery
Cats are monitored in a safe recovery space until they are ready to return. Any cat requiring additional treatment is assessed individually.
Return and Monitoring
Suitable cats are returned to the familiar territory where they were found. NFS works with residents, businesses and designated caregivers to encourage continued feeding, observation and responsible community care.
WHY RETURN CATS?
A familiar territory is a community cat’s home. Removing cats without addressing reproduction often creates space for other unsterilised cats to move into the area.
Returning healthy, sterilised and vaccinated cats helps stabilise the existing population while preventing future litters.
Not every cat will be returned. Friendly cats, vulnerable kittens and cats who cannot safely go back to their original environment may be considered for treatment, adoption, sanctuary care or Paka Mkazi placement, depending on their needs and available capacity.
WHO CAN REQUEST TNVR SUPPORT?
NFS accepts TNVR enquiries from:
- Residents and community caregivers
- Residential estates and property managers
- Hotels, restaurants and other businesses
- Schools and institutions
- Farms and secure commercial premises
- Animal-welfare partners and community organisations
Cooperation from the people responsible for the site is essential. Successful TNVR requires reliable access, accurate information, coordinated feeding and a commitment to the cats’ continuing welfare.
DOG WELFARE INTERVENTIONS
Although NFS is primarily a feline organisation, we may assist dogs in cases of severe need, immediate danger or serious welfare concern.
These cases are assessed individually according to urgency, available space, veterinary requirements and resources. NFS does not operate as a general dog-admission shelter, and submitting a report does not guarantee that we can take the animal into our care.
