Nairobi Feline Sanctuary works to prevent suffering before it begins, respond to animals in severe need, and create safe, sustainable outcomes for cats living in different environments.
Our work brings together TNVR, rescue and sanctuary care, Paka Mkazi placements, responsible adoption, community education and partnerships. Although our work is rooted in feline welfare, we also respond to dogs in severe need where our resources and capacity allow.
A prevention-led approach
Shelters alone cannot solve the challenges facing Kenya’s cats.
Whenever it is safe and appropriate, we focus on preventing unwanted litters, improving the health of community-cat populations and helping people manage animals humanely where they already live.
For every animal, we consider health, temperament, environment and long-term welfare before deciding whether return, adoption, Paka Mkazi placement or sanctuary care offers the most suitable outcome.
TNVR
Reducing suffering at its source
Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return is a humane and effective way to manage community-cat populations.
Cats are humanely trapped, sterilised, vaccinated, allowed to recover and returned to a safe, familiar environment with community support. This prevents repeated breeding, improves welfare and helps reduce disease risk, conflict and pressure on shelters.
NFS works with residents, caregivers, residential estates, businesses and other partners to identify and manage community-cat populations responsibly.

A safe place for animals in severe need
NFS provides rescue, treatment, recovery and sanctuary care for animals facing serious welfare risks.
Priority is given to severely injured or ill animals, orphaned or vulnerable kittens, pregnant or nursing mothers in unsafe conditions, seniors, animals with disabilities and abandoned animals that cannot survive safely without intervention.
Our sanctuary at Riara Ridge, in the Tigoni area, along Nazareth–Limuru Road, Kiambu County, provides space for treatment, recovery and long-term care where return, placement or adoption is not appropriate. Because sanctuary capacity is limited, every request is assessed individually.

Paka Mkazi
Free to Belong
Paka Mkazi is NFS’s structured community-cat placement programme.
It creates safe, supported placements for suitable sterilised and vaccinated cats that cannot return to their previous location but may not be suited to conventional home adoption.
Approved farms, hotels, warehouses, institutions and other suitable properties provide food, clean water, shelter and ongoing monitoring. In return, the cats are given the freedom and security to live according to their nature.

Finding the right home for every cat
Some cats are ready to leave sanctuary life and become part of a permanent home.
NFS supports responsible adoption through careful assessment, appropriate matching and the screening of potential adopters. Our aim is not simply to place cats quickly, but to find safe homes prepared to make a lifelong commitment to their care.

Lasting change happens together
Animal welfare improves when communities have access to practical information, humane services and trusted support.
NFS works with schools, community-cat caregivers, residential estates, businesses, hospitality establishments, veterinary professionals, volunteers and institutions.
Our partnerships may include animal-welfare education, TNVR coordination, responsible community-cat management, Paka Mkazi placements, staff or caregiver guidance and collaborative welfare projects.
