RESCUE AND SANCTUARY CARE
Nairobi Feline Sanctuary provides rescue, treatment and sanctuary care for cats facing serious welfare risks.
More than 200 cats currently live at our sanctuary at Riara Ridge, in the Tigoni area, along Nazareth–Limuru Road, Kiambu County. Some are recovering while they await suitable homes. Others are elderly, disabled, chronically unwell or unable to live safely anywhere else. For these cats, the sanctuary is their permanent home.
NFS is not an open-admission shelter. Every new case is assessed individually according to urgency, welfare needs, available space and resources.
CASES WE PRIORITISE
Priority may be given to:
- Cats with serious injuries or illness
- Cats facing immediate danger, cruelty or deliberate harm
- Pregnant cats without safe shelter or reliable care
- Orphaned or vulnerable kittens who cannot survive without intervention
- Mother cats whose kittens are at serious risk
- Elderly or disabled cats without a safe alternative
- Cats who cannot safely return to their original environment
- Welfare cases identified through NFS TNVR activities
Submitting a report does not guarantee admission. Where sanctuary placement is not the most appropriate response, NFS may recommend veterinary treatment, TNVR, supported community care, adoption or Paka Mkazi placement.
BEFORE BRINGING AN ANIMAL TO NFS
Please do not bring or leave an animal at the sanctuary without prior assessment and approval.
Unexpected arrivals place existing residents at risk and may exceed the sanctuary’s space, staffing, quarantine and medical capacity.
If you find an animal in severe need:
Take clear photographs or a short video where it is safe to do so.
Record the exact location.
Note whether the animal has an owner or regular caregiver.
Submit a welfare report or contact NFS on WhatsApp.
Wait for NFS to advise on the safest next step.

Every admitted cat receives an individual assessment and care plan, which may include:
- Safe accommodation
- Nutritious food and clean water
- Veterinary assessment and treatment
- Sterilisation and vaccination
- Parasite control
- Recovery monitoring
- Socialisation where appropriate
- Adoption or placement assessment
- Lifelong care when no safe alternative exists
The appropriate outcome is determined by each cat’s health, temperament, history and welfare needs.
A SANCTUARY WITH A PREVENTIVE PURPOSE
We do not believe the answer to animal suffering is an ever-expanding shelter.
Our long-term direction is to reserve sanctuary care primarily for cats who genuinely cannot live safely elsewhere, particularly elderly, disabled and medically vulnerable cats.
Healthy community cats should, wherever possible, remain in their familiar territories following TNVR. Socialised cats may be rehomed, while suitable non-returnable cats may be considered for Paka Mkazi placement.
This approach allows NFS to protect cats in immediate need while investing in preventive solutions that reduce future admissions.
DOG WELFARE CASES
Although NFS is primarily a feline organisation, we may assist dogs facing severe need, immediate danger or serious welfare concerns.
Dog cases are assessed individually according to urgency, veterinary needs, available space and resources. NFS does not operate as a general dog-admission shelter.
